Savannah Morning News: “Johnson for mayor”

October 31, 2007

Today the Savannah Morning News has an article titled:

“Johnson for mayor”
Wednesday, October 31, 2007

(A link to the article is at the bottom of this post)

The subtitle sums it up:
Savannah voters should re-elect Otis Johnson.

[ "otis johnson blog" editors note: Vote! We must avoid a run off! ]

Communications is at the heart of democracy

Below are some highlights from the article, (edited for brevity, see full article via the link at the bottom).

Under the administration of Mayor Otis Johnson, the council has taken a more hands-on approach to key issues such as crime, poverty, neighborhood blight and the delivery of city services.

… Mr. Johnson has since established himself as the council’s leader …

… we believe that Mr. Johnson has earned a second term. We encourage voters to support his candidacy on Nov. 6 in the six-way race for mayor.

Mr. Johnson has shown himself to be a man of his word.
Take crime … (see article)
Take neighborhoods and blight … (see article)
Take education, public infrastructure and jobs … (see article)

One of Mr. Johnson’s best attributes is his fearlessness. He’s not afraid to say something unpopular from his bully pulpit. However, he has shown he can work with anybody for the common good.

Savannah faces a lot of challenges over the next four years. So does this region, which is growing. We believe that Otis Johnson has the city moving in the right direction, and we encourage voters to give him a second term.

Mayor’s Health Challenge

October 14, 2007

From the front page of the Savannah Morning News:

Healthy start to autumn
“Savannah Mayor Otis Johnson was there to lead the way to better lifestyles, setting the pace for a health walk and launching the Mayor’s Health Challenge. The latter is a 12-week competition involving 20 families each from Savannah and Albany in southwest Georgia. The idea is to determine which set of families can improve its health most during the next three months.”

Interactions have begun

October 9, 2007

Our efforts to communicate by blog have not gone unnoticed.
communicating

So far we noticed that we have been noticed by:
“The Southeast News Leader” WTOC, in a story by Charles Gray, Executive Producer, New Media.

and The Creative Coast Initiative (TCCi) in their news section:
Mayor Otis Johnson Launches Blog

as well as a post on the blog of TCCi:
Dude, the Mayor has a Mac (and a blog).

It’s instructive to see how the language used to communicate becomes more and more informal as the news articles move from traditional media (WTOC), to the website (TCCI), then to the blog post (Dude!).

Did we miss any press?

[much later in the day] Whoops … We missed this one on our first pass but hope that we’ll remain involved with such players. Check ‘em out at The City Unfiltered’s SavannahNow, their main page.

Participate in this virtual community

October 2, 2007

We’re using this blog to reach out to you and I need your help.
Tell your friends and relatives about this blog so that we can begin to create a virtual community. It is important for me to establish this community because I think that as you ask other people to log on, you can engage in a conversation with them and they can join the conversation along with you and me. That is very important.

Otis Johnson, blogger

Click on this audio player to hear Otis Johnson in his own words.

This is my first posting on otisjohnsonblog.com.
I’m using this medium to reach out to the voters of Savannah so that you may get to know me. When you go into the polling places on November 6th we ask you to vote for Otis Johnson, so that we may have another four years of the progress that we have been making in the city of Savannah.

It’s very important that I reach out to you because throughout my career, I have always attempted to get people to know me and to know how I think and know why I take certain positions. This blog will allow me to reach out on a regular basis.

You can respond and we can have an interactive dialog.
Please check back on a regular basis and give your feedback so we may know what you are thinking.
